Wilson Does It Again

First Baseman Drives in Five as Southern Maryland Romps, 11-2

Zach Wilson continues to kill the Lancaster Barnstormers

The Southern Maryland first baseman drove in five runs Monday evening to pace the Blue Crabs to an 11-2 victory over the Barnstormers in the opener of a four-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium.

For the season, Wilson has knocked in 17 runs in seven games against Lancaster, 11 in the only two wins picked up by Southern Maryland in the season series.

Blake Gailen had given the Barnstormers a 1-0 lead with a double into the right field corner in the second.

Nate Reed ran into trouble on a pair of infield singles in the third.  Mike Snyder and Wilson followed with two-out line drive base hits to produce a 2-1 lead.

Caleb Gindl tied the game with a two-out RBI single off second baseman Gary Brown’s glove in the top of the fifth, but the Blue Crabs were able to chain together five singles off Reed (0-1) and R.J. Hively in the bottom of the inning.  It was Wilson that broke the tie, drilling a one-out single into left to score Brown.  Dylon Rodriguez, the final batter faced by Reed, singled home two more for a 5-2 lead, and Luis Alen capped the uprising with a two-out single into left off Hively.

Snyder hit a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth, and Wilson added a three-run blast in the eighth.

Gaby Hernandez (2-0) allowed six hits and the two Lancaster runs in 5 1/3 innings.  The Barnstormers managed only three singles off the Southern Maryland relief staff.

The second game of the series comes up on Tuesday evening.  Lancaster will send Bryan Evans (1-1) to the hill against lefty Pat McCoy (0-1).  Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:15.
