Sugar Land Power Show Gains Split

Barnstormers Fall, 10-4, in Sunday Matinee

 Sugar Land whacked eight extra base hits on Sunday afternoon en route to a 10-4 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers at Constellation Field.

 With the Skeeters Sunday victory, Sugar Land owns a one-game lead in the Freedom Division chase following a split of the four-game set in Texas.

 Lance Zawadzki keyed a two-run third inning off Brad Bergesen (2-1) with a long double into right center, but it wasn’t until the fifth that the Skeeters broke the game open.

 Josh Prince led off the inning with a double to left and rode home two batters later on Jeremy Barfield’s sixth homer of the year, a fly ball lofted onto the left field deck.  Travis Scott followed with a single, and Andy Wilkins connected for a two-run blast to right and a 6-0 advantage.

The Barnstormers were able to make the game interesting in the sixth after sending the minimum of 15 batters to the plate against Bobby Blevins (2-0) over the first five.  Trayvon Robinson led off with a walk, and Kevin Ahrens doubled him to third.  Tyler Clark dropped a single into center to score one.  Blevins (2-0), who was drilled by a Sean Halton liner an inning earlier came out of the game and was replaced by Andrew Johnston.  Darian Sandford singled through the right side to cut the Sugar Land lead to 6-2.  Garrett Weber flied out to the wall in left for the first out, and K.C. Hobson doubled home a pair to get Halton to the plate as the tying run.  Felipe Paulino took over and got the final two outs to protect the lead.

 Sugar Land’s power went back to work in the bottom of the inning as Zawadzki doubled home Prince for the second time in the game.  The bottom of the Skeeter lineup got into the act in the eighth inning as doubles by Joe Benson and Albert Cordero and a homer by Derek Miller iced the game for the host club.

Lancaster is off on Monday and will open a three-game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Tuesday night.  Nate Reed (0-0) will make the start for the Barnstormers.  Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:15.

 NOTES:  The series ended even with 27 runs apiece…Also dead even is the all-time series at 52-52…The only two errors of the series were the result of throw on steals attempts, one on each side…The Barnstormers failed to get eight hits for the first time in 20 games…The six-run loss tied Lancaster’s biggest of the year…Hobson’s double extended his hitting streak to nine…For the second straight game, each Sugar Land starter contributed at least one hit.
