Barnstormers, Rev Spring Training Game Ends in Tie
Solid Player Performances During Game
Melvin Mercedes banged out hits, including a double from each side of the plate, and Colton Shaver contributed a single and a double, to boost the Barnstormers into a 4-4, eight-inning tie Thursday afternoon at People’s Bank Ballpark in York.
However, the biggest revelation of the afternoon, may have been lefty starter Augie Sylk. Sylk, who was 5-7 with a 9.09 ERA for Lancaster, struck out five in two innings, yielding only an infield single, in his first spring outing, covering the third and fourth innings
York struck for the first three runs of the afternoon. In the first, Troy Stokes, Jr. beat out an infield single and stole second. Carlos Castro banged a double off the left field wall against Brent Teller to plate the first run. A wild pitch on ball four to Nellie Rodriguez sent Franco to third, and the second run scored on Carlos Castro’s 4-6 force play grounder.
Elmer Reyes, a member of the 2021 West Virginia Power, belted a solo homer to the playground in left center field in the second for the 3-0 lead.
Lancaster, 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position in the first five innings, broke through in the sixth. A bases loaded passed ball enabled Kelly Dugan to cross the plate with the first run. Lancaster reloaded the bases on a walk to Anthony Peroni and Jake Hoover squared the game with a single flared into right, scoring Marc Zagunis and Shaver.
Mercedes, with his second double and third hit of the game, reached second with one out in the seventh. Walks to Trace Loehr, Kelly Dugan and LeDarious Clark, scored the go-ahead run.
An opposite field home run by Troy Stokes, Jr. off Marc Rzepczynski opened the York half of the eighth, but the veteran lefty bounced back to strike out the side in order.
The Barnstormers host the Black Sox on Friday afternoon at Lebanon Valley College. Gametime is 4:30. Admission is free, but seating is limited. The game will be streamed on the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 4:30.
