SOLO HOMERS NOT ENOUGH

Caleb Gindl and Joe Terdoslavich hit booming solo home runs on Saturday evening, but they were not enough as the Sugar Land Skeeters eked out a 4-3 decision over the Lancaster Barnstormers in the middle game of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Sugar Land scored in the top of the first off Jonathan Albaladejo (2-8).  Wynton Bernard singled and stole second.  A base hit up the middle by Jason Martinson sent Bernard to third.  With one out, Martinson was put into motion, and Zach Borenstein’s grounder to second produced the run.

Gindl answered with a blast off the back ad signs in right center off Chase De Jong (4-2).

Sugar Land picked up its second lead of the night as right fielder Blair Beck cranked his third homer of the season down the left field line to start the fifth.

Terdoslavich’s blast to right center, his 19th of the year, retied the game in the bottom of the sixth.

The Barnstormers could not come up with the big play in the final two frames.

In the eighth, Rico Noel lined a single into left center to start the inning.  He took second on a deep fly to center by Bernard and stole third.  Albaladejo struck out Jason Martinson, but the third strike got away from Parker Morin as the lead run scored.

A bases loaded sacrifice fly by Noel in the ninth added an insurance run.

After loading the bases with one out in the eighth and failing to get the tying run across the plate, the Barnstormers got another chance in the ninth.  WIth two outs, Darian Sandford hit a sharp comebacker which caromed off Dan Runzler and rolled away.  Runzler’s rushed throw ended up down the right field line as Sandford raced to second.  Greg Golson singled home the run to cut the deficit to one.  Devon Torrence kept the game alive with another base hit to right center, sending Golson to third.  Gindl walked, but Runzler coaxed a force play grounder out of Terdoslavich to end the game.

The rubber game of the series will be played at 5:00 on Sunday.  Lancaster will send right-hander Connor Overton (1-1) to the hill against right-hander Mike Hauschild (3-0).  Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 4:45.
