Closer Heads to Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals have purchased the contract of Lancaster closer, Andrew Schultz, it was announced today. He will join the Class AA Springfield Cardinals of the Texas League.
Schultz is the fourth member of the 2026 Stormers to have his contract purchased since the beginning of spring training.
The right-hander from Tennessee was dominant in his work out of the Lancaster pen. Over 16 appearances, Schultz picked up two wins, four holds and six saves while posting a 1.64 ERA. He allowed only four hits in 16 innings while walking 12 and striking out 31. In one stretch, he threw 9.2 hitless and scoreless innings over 10 appearances. No right-handed batter hit safely off him after a double by Ian Yetsko of Staten Island on May 3.
“I figured it was just a matter of time,” said Lancaster manager Ross Peeples. “He has a live arm. He dominated when he got the ball, and he goes about his business the right way. I think he has a chance to make it to the big leagues, if he gets off to a hot start.”
Prior to coming to the Stormers, Schultz spent seven seasons in the Philadelphia organization. Most of that time was at Class AA Reading.
During spring training, catcher Adam Hackenberg was purchased by Toronto. Starting pitcher Adam Smith’s contract was purchased by Seattle after the right-hander made two starts. The previous closer, Billy Sullivan, had his contract purchased by Washington.
