NOGOSEK RESCUES THE EVENING

Six-Out Save Holds 7-6 Win

Stephen Nogosek turned in a herculean effort for the Lancaster Stormers on Saturday evening, shutting the door on the Staten Island FerryHawks in a 7-6 Lancaster victory, the club’s seventh straight.

With the win, Lancaster’s 10th in the last 11 games, the Stormers stayed two games ahead of the York Revolution in the second half chase.

Nogosek entered the game in the eighth with the tying and lead runs on base and nobody out.  The former Met picked Jordan Howard off second before striking out Nate Scantlin and Pablo Sandoval to protect the lead.  In the ninth, the right-hander struck out Luis Castro looking to open the frame.  Alejandro de Aza drove a 3-2 pitch to the fence in right center for a double, but Nogosek struck out Ben Norman and Roldani Baldwin quickly to preserve the win.

Lancaster had taken the lead with a four-run sixth.  Shawon Dunston, Jr. belted a two-run homer off Mike Shawaryn to cut the FerryHawk lead to 6-5.  Joe Stewart and Chris Proctor followed with doubles to chase the starter and tie the game.  With lefty Brian Warzek taking over, Proctor stole third and scampered home with the lead run on a wild pitch.

Staten Island had taken a 2-0 lead off starter Brady Tedesco in the top of the first on an RBI single by Sandoval and a double play ball.

Lancaster fought back with a three-run second.  Gaige Howard reached Shawaryn (5-6) for a leadoff double into the left field corner.  After Dunston lined out, Shawaryn issued consecutive walks to Stewart and Proctor.  Chad Sedio ripped a two-run double into the right field corner to tie the game.

Nate Scantlin’s triple and an infield out by Sandoval tied the game in the third, and the FerryHawks surged into the lead in the fifth.  Kolbi Johnson greeted starter Brady Tedesco with a single and took third on a double by Scantlin.  Trace Loehr smothered a hot grounder down the third base line by Sandoval as a run scored.  The Stormers walked Luis Castro intentionally, who promptly stole second.  De Aza rapped a grounder to second, and Scantlin beat the throw home for a 5-3 lead.  Tedesco left after walking Norman to load the bases.  Adam Wibert took over and retired Baldwin on a foul pop up. He hit Jeison Guzman with a pitch to force home the sixth run.

Jackson Rees (3-0) struck out the side in the sixth to earn the win.

Max Green (7-4) will start for the Stormers on Sunday at 3:00.  Malik Binns (0-1, 3-6) will counter for Staten Island.  Fans may tune into the broadcast on FloBaseball at 2:55.
