NEWCOMER WILLIAMS LEADS BARNSTORMERS TO WIN

Lancaster Captures Final Night Game, 6-4

Miles Williams had an eventful second game in a Lancaster Barnstormers uniform.

The young outfielder from California went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI to lead the Lancaster offense to a 6-4 victory over the Bridgeport Bluefish at Harbor Yard.

His third hit snapped a 4-4 tie in the top of the eighth inning, a tie that was created when his throwing error allowed two runs to score in the bottom of the seventh.

Stephen Shackleford, Lancaster’s third pitcher of the night, was working with a 4-2 lead and two outs in the bottom of the seventh when he walked Endy Chavez. Welington Dotel cracked a double past Williams in right. Chavez got a late stop sign at third, but Williams throw came all the way through the infield and down the third base dugout steps, letting both runs score.

In the top of the eighth, the Barnstormers loaded the bases with one out on two walks from Orlando Santos (0-1) and a single by Mike Jacobs. Former big leaguer Sam Gervacio was summoned, and Williams looped a 3-2 pitch into left center, just out of the reach of the diving Chavez, to plate the lead run.

Jacobs drove in an insurance marker in the top of the ninth with a sacrifice fly.

The bottom of the first cost the Barnstormers a run and their starting pitcher. Luis Gonzalez walked Luis Hernandez on four pitches. Hernandez took second on a bunt by Chavez and went to third on a wild pitch. Dotel drove home the run with a sacrifice fly.

Geraldo Valentin popped a 3-1 pitch into foul territory to the third base side of the home plate circle. Catcher Chase Patterson could not find the ball, and Gonzalez raced in to aid his catcher. Near the foul line, Gonzalez twisted his knee and had to be helped off the field by the coaching staff. There is no word on the extent of the injury.

Ryan Dennick took over and worked the next 4 1/3 innings, his longest stint of the season.

A triple by Williams scored Kevin Ahrens in the third. Williams came home on a bad relay throw for a 2-1 lead.

Jose Cuevas tied the game with a double to center that Caleb Gindl lost in the lights in the fourth. Sean Halton doubled home a go-ahead run in the sixth but was thrown out trying for a triple. Ahrens added a home run to left.

Pete Andrelczyk pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

Joe Gardner (3-1) will start the season finale against Jonathen Albaladejo (14-6). Lancaster manager Butch Hobson will start the game at 3B and will play the first inning. Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 12:55.
