Garner’s Bat, Bergesen’s Arm Pace Barnstormers!

Lancaster Sprays Skeeters, 10-0

Cole Garner missed the cycle by the home run, and Brad Bergesen pitched five scoreless innings as the Lancaster Barnstormers defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters, 10-0, Monday evening at Constellation Field.

The win vaulted the Barnstormers into a first place tie with the York Revolution in the Freedom Division’s second half.

Garner misfired with the bases loaded in the first inning, striking out, but went on to double in a run in the second and clear the bases with a triple into the right field corner in the sixth inning.  Between those, he singled to right in the fourth.

With a chance to homer for the cycle, he fouled out down the right field line off sidearming right-hander Chris Treibt in the eighth.

Lancaster provided Bergesen the support he needed in the top of the first.  A one-out walk to Trayvon Robinson was followed by soft line drive singles off the bats of Josh Bell and Sean Halton to load the bases.  Garrett Weber walked on a 3-2 pitch to force home one run.

It looked like Mitch Talbot (3-2) pitched out of the inning.  He struck out Garner then jammed Anderson De La  Rosa.  De La Rosa cued a ball to the right side of the mound.  First baseman Travis Scott could not field the spinning hop and was charged with an error.  Nate Coronado followed with a two-run single for the 4-0 lead.

Bergesen (5-6) fired five scoreless innings, scattering four hits and striking out two.  He was followed into the game by Kevin Munson, who worked a two-inning stint, Kaohi Downing and Daniel Moskos.  The trio of relievers surrendered one hit in completing the whitewash.

Lancaster will send lefty Tommy Shirley (0-1) to the hill on Tuesday evening against right-hander Jake Hale (5-2).  Fans may follow the game on the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 7:45 EDT.
