NEW BRITAIN TAKES SERIES FINALE
Stormers Finish with Split, Long Island Next
For the third straight game, the Lancaster Barnstormers and New Britain Bees were scoreless well into the contest.
On Sunday afternoon, the roof caved in on the Barnstormers.
New Britain struck for three runs in the fifth and six more in the sixth inning to pull away for a 10-1 victory in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Jared Lakind (6-7) carried a shutout into the top of the fifth, surviving four singles and three walks in the first four frames. Ryan Jackson and Bijan Rademacher started the fifth with consecutive singles. With runners at the corners, Jason Rogers smacked a grounder to third. Joe Terdoslavich caught Jackson in a rundown, but he stayed in it long enough for the other runners to advance to second and third. Mike Carp drilled a two-run single past the drawn-in infielders and took second when Caleb Gindl’s throw behind him at first base was left unattended. Jared James picked up the third run with a bloop single to center.
Garrett Granitz and Matt Marksberry fared no better in the sixth. Rando Moreno tripled inside the first base bag to open the inning and scored on a one-out single to left by Jackson. Four walks and two wild pitches later, it was 7-1. Logan Moore capped the inning with a two-run single to center.
Rainy Lara (7-10) worked the first five innings for the Bees before leaving with an injury on the leadoff batter in the sixth. He allowed only two hits, a single by Terdoslavich in the first and a towering home run to right center by Parker Morin to start the fifth. Between the two hits, the right-hander retired 11 consecutive Lancaster hitters.
Chris Reed worked the next three innings, and Sam Gervacio wrapped things up in the ninth, allowing only a bloop single by Devon Torrence.
Lancaster opens a four-game series against the Long Island Ducks on Monday at 5:00. John Anderson (10-6) will need six strikeouts to tie the franchise single season record of 130, set by Bryan Evans in 2016. His mound opponent will be right-hander Seth Simmons (2-4, 7-8). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel at 4:45.
NOTES: The margin of defeat was the largest for the Barnstormers since June 25, when the club lost, 14-3, to Somerset…Caleb GIndl pitched a scoreless ninth.

DUCKS HOMERS DEFEAT BARNSTORMERS
Lancaster Falls, 6-2, in Series Opener
The Long Island Ducks slugged one homer before a rain delay and two after it, beating the Lancaster Barnstormers, 6-2, in a Labor Day contest at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
David Washington connected for a two-run shot in the top of the fourth on the only hit allowed by starter John Anderson (10-7) in his four innings of work, staking the Ducks to a 2-1 lead.
Following the one-hour, 26-minute stoppage that came at the end of 3 ½ innings, the Ducks put four quick runs on the board over the next two innings.
In the fifth, Vladimir Frias ripped a one-out double into the right field corner off Pedro Echemendia. Lew Ford grounded a single into left, just past the outstretched glove of shortstop Michael Martinez, and Deibinson Romero crept a base hit into right, just out of the reach of second baseman Josh Bell for a 3-1 lead.
Echemendia appeared to be on his way to a clean sixth inning, but Rey Fuented clipped him for a solo homer to right. D’Arby Myers reached on a fumble by Michael Martinez, and Frias sent another home run soaring over the right field tents for the final margin of victory.
Josh Bell led the Barnstormers offense with three hits off three different Long Island pitchers. The hitting coach, in the lineup at second base, blasted a home run leading off the Lancaster third, for the game’s first run. He reached on a fielder’s choice in the fifth and scored the only other ‘Stormers run on the night.
Bell did his best to ignite a rally later in the game. He led off the seventh with a single up the middle, an inning in which Caleb Gindl also walked.
In the ninth, Anderson De La Rosa led off with a base hit to left center. Bell followed with a ball ripped up the middle that sent pinch runner Devon Torrence to third. In neither case did the Barnstormers produce a run.
Felix Carvallo (2-0) pitched the final two innings for the Ducks and was awarded the win.
The Barnstormers will send right-hander Jonathan Albaladejo (2-9) to the hill on Tuesday evening against right-hander Joe Iorio (5-3). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Bell had his first three-hit game since June 1…Darian Sandford stole two bases for a league-leading total of 62 on the season and 189 in the Atlantic League…Scott Shuman threw his eighth consecutive scoreless inning.

CLOSE CALL LEADS TO FOURTH STRAIGHT LOSS
Lancaster Falls to Ducks, 6-3
Baseball is often referred to as a game of inches.
On Tuesday night, that may have been reduced to nanometers.
With two outs and a runner at first in a game tied, 3-3, in the top of the seventh inning, Jonathan Albaladejo dealt a 3-2 pitch to Long Island DH Lew Ford. It ended up excruciatingly close to the outside corner, but the automated ball-strike system determined that it missed the strike zone by a miniscule amount.
Instead of ending the inning, the resultant walk perpetuated an inning that ultimately led to three runs and a 6-3 Long Island win over the Lancaster Barnstormers at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Following the walk to Ford, L.J. Mazzilli drilled an RBI single into left, scoring Rey Fuentes with the go-ahead run. Hector Sanchez greeted Matt Marksberry with a slow roller into right that scored Ford for a 5-3 lead. Mazzilli scored the third run of the inning when a third strike to Deibinson Romero bounced away from Parker Morin.
Andrew Aplin belted his sixth of the season in the opening inning for a 1-0 lead. The Ducks responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Walks to Sanchez and David Washington around a single by Romero loaded the bases against Albaladejo (2-10). Vladimir Frias and Clint Freeman each hit a force play grounder to drive home a run for a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth, the Ducks strung together five singles off Albaladejo but only managed one run as Aplin began a relay from right field to nab Fuentes on an RBI single to right by Ford. Ford was later cut down at home by Aplin on a single to right by Sanchez.
Josh Bell and Morin knotted the game with consecutive homers in the bottom of the sixth off former Blue Jay Scott Richmond (1-0) in his Atlantic League debut.
The Barnstormers host the Ducks in the third game of the series on Wednesday evening. Connor Overton (2-2) will make the start for the Barnstormers against right-hander Vin Mazzaro (8-4). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Bell is 7-for-14 with three homers in his last five games…The Barnstormers are 4-15 against the Ducks on the season with no loss by more than four runs…Lancaster has not won a game started by Albaladejo since July 24.

FUENTES, MAZZILLI PACE LONG ISLAND
Barnstormers Drop Fifth Straight
Rey Fuentes went 3-for-4 with a home run, and L.J. Mazzilli drove home four as the Long Island Ducks built an 11-5 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers Wednesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
It was Lancaster’s fifth loss in a row after the club swept a doubleheader to begin the current homestand.
Mazzilli drove home the tying run in the third inning with an RBI single to left and capped the Long Island surge with a three-run double to right center in the top of the eighth.
Fuentes belted a double to right center, scoring D’Arby Myers to extend the Ducks’ lead in the fourth inning and added a booming homer to right two innings late.
Lancaster grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning. A double by Melvin Mercedes and infield single by Caleb Gindl got the Barnstormers off to a big start, but it took a bases loaded infield single by Anderson De La Rosa with two outs to get the two runs home off Anderson DeLeon (1-1).
Connor Overton pitched hitless baseball for the first 2 1/3 innings before John Apostolo singled with one out in the third. The Lancaster right-hander walked Myers, and Fuentes’ infield single loaded the bases. Lew Ford’s grounder to short was hit too slowly for a double play as the first Long Island marker scored. Mazzilli followed with his tying hit, a third run scored on a passed ball.
Fuentes made it 4-2 in the fourth inning, and Hector Sanchez contributed a two-run homer in the fifth.
Caleb Gindl finished the night 3-for-4 with his 21st homer. Mercedes, Josh Bell and De La Rosa collected two hits apiece for the Barnstormers, who rapped out 12 on the night but also left 12 runners on base.
The series finale is set for Thursday at 7:00. Lancaster will send left-hander Nate Reed (4-3) to the mound against former Orioles left-hander Brian Matusz (0-2). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Gindl has four homers on the homestand…As a team, the Barnstormers have hit 12, 10 of them solo…Darian Sandford stole his 190th base in the Atlantic League, moving him within one of fifth place all-time…Gindl threw his fourth straight scoreless appearance, wrapping up the game in the ninth inning…Bell is 6-for-9 with four walks in the series…Long Island won for the 16th time in the season series.

BARNSTORMERS FALL IN HOMESTAND FINALE
Missed Opportunities Lead to 4-2 Defeat
The Lancaster Barnstormers had huge opportunities at both the start and the end of Thursday night’s game, but were unable to get the key blow.
As a result, they fell, 4-2, to the Long Island Ducks in the season series finale Thursday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
After falling behind, 2-0, in the top of the first inning, the Barnstormers bounced back quickly. Caleb Gindl lined a single to right, and Joe Terdoslavich walked. Andrew Aplin dropped a bunt to the first base side of the mound which rolled under the glove of starter Brian Matusz, loading the bases. Lancaster managed only one run, on a force play grounder to short by Michael Martinez with one down in the inning.
Down by two to start the ninth, Martinez greeted Pedro Beato with a ground single up the middle, and Melvin Mercedes drew a walk to put the tying runs on base. Devon Torrence tried to sacrifice the runners ahead but fouled to third. Beato got Darian Sandford to fly out to center. K.C. Hobson worked the count to 3-2, but Beato got him looking on a curveball to end the night.
Long Island’s first three batters reached on singles against Nate Reed (4-4). D’Arby Myers reached on a blooper down the right field line and stole second. Vladimir Frias rolled a single through the hole on the left side with Myers stopping at third. Frias also stole second. Lew Ford dumped an RBI single into shallow right for the 1-0 lead. L.J. Mazzilli’s double play ground ball to shortstop brought home Frias with the second run.
The Ducks also picked up three straight singles in the second inning. Ramon Cabrera laced a single into center and grabbed the third steal of the night. John Apostolo grounded a single up the middle. Lefty batting Clint Freeman flared a single into left for a 3-1 lead. Freeman was thrown out stealing second, and, following a walk, Myers was picked off by Reed.
An unearned run in the seventh stretched the lead back to two.
Lancaster unveiled two new relievers in the game. Dylan Rheault pitched a scoreless eighth inning despite hitting a batter and yielding a single. Lefty Casey Crosby fanned two of three batters he faced in the ninth.
Lancaster heads to New Britain to start a four-game series on Friday night. The Barnstormers will send Jared Lakind (6-7) to the mound against Rainy Lara (7-10). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:15.
NOTES: Long Island defeated the Barnstormers by one or two runs 10 times on the season…Martinez’ homer was his second as a right-handed batter…All ten Ducks hits were singles.

BARNSTORMERS ROUT BEES
Terdoslavich, Sandford Propel Lancaster to Huge Win
The Lancaster Barnstormers went to New England and took no prisoners.
Joe Terdoslavich homered and drove in five runs, and Darian Sandford knocked home four tallies on three singles as the Barnstormers demolished the New Britain Bees for a 13-1 victory on Friday evening at New Britain Stadium.
Lancaster’s previous largest margin of victory in 2019 was ten, which had been reached twice.
The salvo began in the top of the second. Destin Hood grounded a single up the middle. Anderson De La Rosa took Rainy Lara (7-11) into right field for a second single, and Michael Martinez loaded the sacks with a single to right. Lara got Josh Bell to pop out, but Sandford cranked a single into right. The Barnstormers were about to be content with scoring only Hood until the ball skipped past right fielder Jared James for a two-base error, giving Lancaster a 3-0 lead.
Nothing more was accomplished by the Barnstormers until the fifth when K.C. Hobson greeted Lara with a single to left center. Caleb Gindl drove a double off the base of the fence in left, bringing up Terdoslavich, who blasted his 21st home run of the season to right, staking Lancaster to a 6-0 lead. Sandford added a bases loaded single up the middle for an 8-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Jared Lakind (7-7) was enjoying one of his best starts of the season. The left-hander carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth and retired the first two batters on ground balls. He worked ahead of first baseman Jason Rogers, but the former Brewer broke up the no-hit bid and the shutout with a fly ball home run to left.
Lakind allowed nothing else over the remainder of his seventh inning stint.
The Barnstormers scored their final five runs off two position players, Ozzie Martinez and Mike Carp, over the last two innings.
Lancaster went the same route. Gindl walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the ninth, then retired the side in order, two on strikes, in recording his fifth straight scoreless appearance.
The Barnstormers take on New Britain in the second game of the series on Saturday. John Anderson (10-7) will need six strikeouts to set the Barnstormers single season record. He will be opposed by right-hander Akeel Morris (5-3). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:15.
NOTES: It was the second time that Lakind had gone the first 20 batters without allowing a base hit this season…Lakind is 4-1 with a 3.17 ERA away from Lancaster…Terdoslavich joined Hobson as the only Barnstormers with five-RBI games this season…Gindl has not allowed a run in the second half.

BEES HOMERS DROP ANDERSON, ‘STORMERS
Anderson Falls Shy of Strikeout Mark in 3-1 Loss
Lancaster’s pitching has held the hard-hitting New Britain Bees to a total of five hits in the first two games of the weekend series at New Britain Stadium. Three of those have left the park.
On Saturday evening, Darren Ford and Jason Rogers had the only two hits off John Anderson in six innings, but they were both home runs, leading the Bees to a 3-1 victory in the second game of the four-game set.
In his six innings of work, Anderson (10-8) struck out just four, leaving him with 129 strikeouts on the season. The total is one shy of the franchise single season record, set by Bryan Evans in 2016.
Ford led off the game with a homer to left. Two batters later, Anderson walked Rogers. The left-hander settled down and retired 14 of the next 16 batters with the only two men to reach doing so on Lancaster errors.
Meanwhile, the Barnstormers had early chances off right-hander Akeel Morris (6-3). Caleb Gindl and Andrew Aplin singled in the first, but both were left stranded. The Barnstormers managed their only run in the second. Greg Golson reached base on a throwing error by shortstop Ryan Jackson which skipped into the first base dugout to start the inning. With one out, Darian Sandford cracked a double into the right field corner to tie the game at 1-1.
Lancaster had a promising start to the third inning. Joe Terdoslavich took advantage of a bobble by Rogers to open the inning, and Aplin followed with a perfectly placed bunt single down the third base line. Parker Morin stepped to the plate and hit a soft liner toward the middle of the field. Jackson moved quickly to his left and caught the ball inches from the bag then easily doubled off Terdoslavich.
The Barnstormers only managed two hits over the remainder of the game, including a double by Aplin.
Sandford picked up a two-out walk in the ninth, giving the Barnstormers a chance against lefty closer Jim Fuller, but the southpaw struck out pinch hitter Destin Hood after a lengthy battle to record his 20th save.
Lancaster takes on New Britain in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon to conclude the season series. The Barnstormers will throw right-handers Jonathan Albaladejo (2-10) and Alejandro Chacin (1-4) against lefty David Roseboom (3-2) and right-hander Sam Gervacio (4-5). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 1:15.
NOTES: Sandford is 5-for-8 with five RBI in the series…Aplin had three hits to break out of a 1-for-22 slump…Anderson had allowed only four homers in his previous 89.2 innings…It was the 11th quality start for Anderson, tops on the club…New Britain leads the season series, 10-8…Scott Shuman recorded his ninth straight scoreless inning with help from Sandford’s leaping catch and a double play started by Michael Martinez.

ALBALADEJO STELLAR IN LOSS
Right-Hander Outdueled, 1-0
Jonathan Albaladejo was terrific on Sunday afternoon. David Roseboom, his mound opponent was virtually unhittable.
Zach Collier drilled a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the second inning to provide the difference as the New Britain Bees captured a 1-0 decision in the opener of a doubleheader at New Britain Stadium.
Albaladejo (2-11) went the distance on a three-hitter. As good as his pitching performance was, his defense may have been even better. With runners at second and third and two outs in the third inning, Jason Rogers spanked a hard ground ball that appeared destined for center field and a two-run single, but Albaladejo reacted quickly and turned the stop into the final out of the inning.
In the sixth, after Darren Ford walked and stole second, the Lancaster righty made three consecutive plays, two with his glove and one with his bare hand, around an intentional walk to keep the Bees from scoring any more.
He went the six-inning distance, allowing three hits while walking three and striking out two for his fifth quality start of the season.
Roseboom (4-2) hardly gave an inch. Lancaster mustered a one-out single by Anderson De La Rosa, who was snuffed out on a steal attempt, in the second and a one-out single by Greg Golson in the third. The left-hander retired the final 14 Barnstormers that he faced, finishing the game with the two-hit shutout. He walked none and fanned eight.
New Britain’s defense, especially the infield on the left side, provided Roseboom with plenty of assistance. Third baseman Ozzie Martinez made two diving stops toward the hole against Melvin Mercedes. Shortstop Ryan Jackson fielded Destin Hood’s sharp grounder into the hole and turned it into the final out of the game.
Game two of the doubleheader will feature right-hander Alejandro Chacin (1-4) of the Barnstormers against right-hander Sam Gervacio (4-5) of the Bees.
NOTES: The game was the fastest seven-inning game played by the Barnstormers this season at one hour, 41 minutes…Albaladejo threw the third straight quality start by a Barnstormer this weekend.

High Point Eliminates Barnstormers
Lancaster Drops Series Opener, 4-1
The sixth inning once again proved to be a turning point for the Lancaster Barnstormers on Wednesday evening.
In that inning, the Barnstormers failed to break a 1-1 tie after a leadoff walk to Darian Sandford. The host Rockers would not miss the same chance, scoring three times en route to a 4-1 victory in the opener of the brief two-game set.
With the loss, the Barnstormers were eliminated from playoff contention in 2019.
Lancaster’s half of the inning began with promise as Sandford walked on a 3-2 pitch from Joe Van Meter (9-5) and promptly stole second. K.C. Hobson ripped a liner barely foul into the High Point bullpen before striking out. Caleb Gindl was ruled out on a check swing, a call that led to his ejection, as Sandford stole third. Joe Terdoslavich ripped a line drive deep to right field that was hauled in by Stephen Cardullo with a sliding catch on the warning track for the final out in the inning, leaving the game tied.
Cardullo was hit by the first pitch from Connor Overton (2-4) in the bottom of the inning. Hector Gomez drilled a single into right center that sent Cardullo to third. Overton was able to pick up the first out as Quincy Latimore bounced to third.
Lancaster went to reliever Logan Sawyer. After the right-hander fell behind Richie Shaffer, 3-0, manager Ross Peeples opted to intentionally walk the High Point first baseman. Michael Martinez made a lunging, backhanded catch on Michael Russell’s sharp line drive for the second out, and Sawyer got ahead of DH John Nester, 0-2, before giving up a sharp single through the right side that scored two. Shaffer came home with the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.
The ‘Stormers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. A line drive by Martinez skipped past Cardullo for a one-out triple. Parker Morin brought the run home with a sacrifice fly to left field.
High Point knotted the score in the fourth inning. Gomez reached on an infield single when second baseman Melvin Mercedes could not get off a throw in time after making a diving stop up the middle. Gomez stole second and remained there as Latimore grounded to short. Shaffer walked, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Russell tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center.
A single by Andrew Aplin and walk to Destin Hood with two outs in the ninth gave the Barnstormers a brief glimmer of hope as Martinez, who has homered twice at BB&T Point this season, came to the plate as the tying run. Ryan Kelly retired him on a comebacker to close out the night with his 13th save.
The Barnstormers and Rockers will conclude the season series on Thursday evening. Jared Lakind (7-7), who allowed only one hit in seven innings at New Britain on Friday will start against one-time Lancaster right-hander Edwin Carl (4-4). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel at 6:15.
NOTES: Sandford’s stolen bases were his 191st and 192nd of his Barnstormers career, ranking his fifth in Atlantic League history…After banging out 15 hits in the road trip opener on Friday, the Barnstormers only have one more than that in their last four games…Casey Crosby pitched his second straight perfect outing since coming to the Barnstormers, striking out four of six batters he has faced.
