BARNSTORMERS PROVIDE DRAMA BUT NOT HAPPY ENDING
Lancaster Comes Up Short, 8-6
The Lancaster Barnstormers generated plenty of excitement for the home crowd at the end of the night on Saturday but could not put the finishing touches on an enormous rally as High Point fended off the late charge for an 8-6 victory at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
It was the second straight win for the fledgling Rockers in the season opening series.
Trailing, 8-1, entering the bottom of the ninth, the Barnstormers loaded the bases on walks to Josh Bell and Parker Morin around a single by Warwick High produce Zach Shank. Melvin Mercedes produced the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center, and Darian Sandford also flied to center for the second out.
Nick Sarianides could not escape the inning. Dan Gamache drilled his second double of the night to the left center field alley, scoring two. Caleb Gindl then launched a long fly ball down the right field line. First base umpire John Torres originally ruled the play foul, but the call was overturned after a discussion with plate umpire Doug McFarling. With the two-run homer, the Barnstormers moved the tying run into the on deck circle.
Right-hander Trevor Frank took over for the Rockers and appeared to end the game when he got Joe Terdoslavich, on the 10th pitch of the at bat, to ground to second. However, Tyler Ladendorf’s toss slightly pulled Dante Bichette, Jr. off the bag for an error. K.C. Hobson, as the potential tying run, fouled to the catcher to end the night after the five-run inning as Frank earned the save.
Most of the night belonged to the Rockers. Former St. Louis Cardinals setup ace Seth Maness (1-0) fired six strong innings, holding the Barnstormers to three hits and a run. Meanwhile, the High Point attack kept pressure on Lancaster pitching.
The Rockers reached Jake McCasland (0-1) for three runs in the third. With one out, Ladendorf walked and rode home on Myles Schroder’s two-run homer to right. Hector Gomez tripled over Shank’s head in left after a false step in. Gomez scored on an ensuing sac fly by Stephen Cardullo.
McCasland left after consecutive singles opened the fifth inning. Jared Lakind struck out the first two batters he faced, but Cardullo was able to rip a double inside the third base bag, scoring Breland Almadova. A perfect relay retired Ladendorf at home.
Four more runs crossed in the sixth inning to build enough of a lead. Giovanny Alfonzo singled home one. Schroder added two more on a single for a four-RBI night, and Gomez capped the scoring with an RBI single to center.
The Barnstormers and Rockers wrap up the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00. Major League veteran Kyle Davies will take the mound for Lancaster against fellow right-hander Seth Simmons. Fans may tune into the YouTube webcast beginning at 12:45.
NOTES: The Barnstormers start 0-2 for the third straight season…Lancaster pitchers fanned 15 Rockers in the game with at least one strikeout in each inning…Overall, the Barnstormers have whiffed 24 in the two games…Logan Sawyer, making his first appearance since 2016, struck out the side in the top of the eighth after a leadoff infield single by Almadova…The crowd was 6,403.
BARNSTORMERS ENTER WIN COLUMN
Lancaster Drops High Point, 8-5
Caleb Gindl and Joey Terdoslavich homered to back a stellar relief effort by John Anderson as the Lancaster Barnstormers picked up their first win of the season, 8-5, over the High Point Rockers on Sunday afternoon at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
It was a large day in general for both Gindl and Terdoslavich. Gindl, the right fielder, went 2-for-3 with his solo homer and three RBI. He also walked and scored twice each. Meanwhile, Terdoslavich was 3-for-4 with his homer and two RBI on the afternoon.
However, the true star of the afternoon may have been Anderson (1-0). The left-hander, in his third season with the Barnstormers, took over in the fifth for Kyle Davies, who had reached his pitch limit, and threw three innings of two-hit baseball, striking out four. The only run charged to him was unearned.
Lancaster took the lead in the bottom of the first inning and was never caught. Following a two-out RBI single by Quincy Latimore in the top of the inning, the Barnstormers struck for a pair in their half. Darian Sandford led off with a walk and dashed to third on an errant pickoff throw by Seth Simmons (0-1). One out later, Gindl picked up Sandford with a smash to shortstop. Terdoslavich followed with his homer to right for the 2-1 lead.
In the second, the Barnstormers added two more as Anderson De La Rosa and Devon Torrence worked out consecutive two-out walks. Sandford singled to center to plate De La Rosa and send Torrence to third. Lancaster executed a double steal as Torrence raced home for a 4-1 lead.
Gindl’s third inning homer and fourth inning RBI single to right would stretch the lead to 6-1.
High Point, trying for the series sweep would not go away, cutting the lead back to 6-3 and later, 7-4.
Entering the top of the ninth, the Rockers trailed, 8-4 Cody Eppley entered for Lancaster and allowed a ringing base hit by Giovanny Alfonzo to open the inning. Shane Opitz dropped a broken bat blooper into left to add a second runner. After Eppley caught Tyler Ladendorf looking at strike three, Myles Schroder picked up his fourth single of the afternoon on a roller through the right side. Hector Gomez fanned for the second out, but Eppley walked Stephen Cardullo on four pitches.
That brought Latimore to the plate. The High Point DH ripped an Eppley offering straight into the glove of third baseman Dan Gamache, bringing the threat and the game to an end.
The Barnstormers will entertain the Long Island Ducks in a four-game series beginning on Monday evening. Lefty Buddy Baumann will make the start for the ‘Stormers against an Atlantic League veteran, right-hander Brett Marshall. Fans my tune into the Barnstormers YouTube broadcast beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Gindl has driven home a run on each of his last four official at bats and has six for the year…The Barnstormers picked up their first three steals of the season in the win…Torrence was 1-for-2 with two runs scored in his first regular season start since 2014…

EARLY SURGE LIFTS LONG ISLAND
Lancaster Pen Stellar in 5-4 Defeat
Despite the best efforts of the Lancaster bullpen, the Long Island Ducks edged the Barnstormers, 5-4, Tuesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
A past member of the bullpen, Scott Shuman (0-1), made his first professional start in the US. The former dominating setup reliever struck out seven in 2 2/3 innings, but between the strikeouts was reached for six hits and five runs in his stint.
Rey Fuentes greeted Shuman leading off the game with a home run on a 3-2 pitch. Kirk Nieuwenhuis singled and went to third on a double by David Washington, but Shuman struck out the final two batters to end the first inning threat.
K.C. Hobson’s towering three-run homer to right in the bottom of the second produced a brief 3-1 Lancaster lead, but the Ducks came back with a huge surge against Shuman in the fourth.
After Shuman struck out Lombardozzi to start the third, Nieuwenhuis ripped a double into the right field corner. Washington mangled a two-run homer to right to tie the game. Shuman, who threw 82 pitches, walked Matt den Dekker and Ivan De Jesus, Jr. in succession. Den Dekker stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Hector Sanchez picked up De Jesus with a single to right center.
From there, John Anderson, Logan Sawyer and Garrett Granitz combined to limit the Ducks to just two baserunners over the remainder of the night.
However, Logan Fisher (1-0) controlled Lancaster’s offense as well, retiring 13 of 15 through the sixth inning. His own error to start the seventh led to the ‘Stormers’ final run, scored on a pinch single by Parker Morin.
Vin Mazzaro and Enrique Burgos fired scoreless innings to close out the night.
The two clubs meet again on Wednesday. Left-hander Jared Lakind will also be making his first career start for the Barnstormers against left-hander Bennett Parry (1-0). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Caleb Gindl singled to start the second, extending his season-opening hitting streak to five…Hobson’s homer was his 56th as a Barnstormer, tying him with Ryan Harvey for fourth all-time…Anderson has thrown 7 1/3 innings, more than any other Atlantic League pitcher in his club’s first five games of the year…Barnstormers pitching struck out 14 more batters on Tuesday. They have fanned 57 in 45 innings for the season.
