| Kevin Ahrens, the first round selection for the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2007 draft, has been signed by the Lancaster Barnstormers for the 2016 season, it was announced today by manager Butch Hobson.
Ahrens, 26, was the 16th player selected overall in 2007. He spent seven seasons in the Toronto system, advancing to Class AA New Hampshire in 2013. From there, the Houston native joined the Atlanta Braves organization. He spent the 2014 season with Class A Lynchburg, pacing the Carolina League with 41 doubles while batting .266. Last season, in 122 games, the first baseman/third baseman slugged nine homers (24% of his team’s total) and drove in 64 runs for Class AA Mississippi in a league where six of the ten teams averaged below four runs per game. This will be Ahrens’ first experience in the Atlantic League. He joins another former Toronto farmhand, Michael Crouse, and two others on the Barnstormers roster for 2016. Both are former teammates of Hobson’s son, K.C., in the Toronto system. “Ahrens is a solid third baseman and will be an asset there for us,” said Hobson. “He has a strong bat as well, and we look for good things out of him.” |
