Roibal, Bridgeport Pen Toss Two-Hit Shutout

Reinier Roibal’s first career effort against the Lancaster Barnstormers was a gem.

The Cuban-born right-hander yielded only one baserunner over six innings in pitching the Bridgeport Bluefish to a 7-0 victory over the Barnstormers Thursday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Roibal (2-2) was only touched by a Steve Clevenger bloop double that landed inches fair down the left field line with one out in the second inning.  Otherwise, the Bridgeport starter struck out seven, got three ground outs and retired eight in the air out of the 19 batters he faced.

Lancaster fared little better against the Bridgeport pen.  Frank DeJiulio, Jr. walked Trayvon Robinson to open up the seventh inning, and Josh Bell doubled against Wander Perez to lead off the ninth.

Bridgeport took the lead on the second pitch of the game.  Welington Dotel drove a pitch from Rommie Lewis (7-10) onto the picnic deck in right field.

The Bluefish would tack on another run in the inning.  Jose Cuevas lined a single to left, and Jose Gil bunted his way on base.  Sean Burroughs bounced into a force play, and Jonathan Galvez picked up the run with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Lewis retired seven straight, but the Bluefish struck again in the fourth.  Galvez cracked a double in left center and took third.  Gustavo Molina walked before Angelys Nina lashed a single into right to score one.  Angel Rosa grounded out to third with the runners advancing, and Dotel singled home both with a grounder up the middle.

Burroughs and Galvez slugged back-to-back homers in the fifth to cap the scoring.

The Barnstormers head to Long Island for a three-game series starting Friday.  Lancaster will send right-hander Joe Gardner (0-2) to the mound against right-hander Jake Dunning (1-0).  Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel beginning at 6:15.

NOTES:  Lancaster’s bullpen threw 12 shutout innings in the series…The Barnstormers have given up the first run in eight consecutive games…The Barnstormers allowed back-to-back homers for the sixth time in 2017.
