BARNSTORMERS RETURN TWO FLAMETHROWERS

Shuman, Brazoban Back in Pen for 2020

In their first two player signings in advance of the 2020 season, the Lancaster Barnstormers have inked returning relievers Scott Shuman and Huascar Brazoban to contracts, it was announced today by manager Ross Peeples.

The two hard throwing right-handers both played integral roles in the Barnstormers’ 2018 playoff run and were expected to do the same in 2019.  Shuman, around a lengthy early season injury, was still able to post solid bullpen numbers last year while Brazoban never made it to Lancaster due to visa complications.

Shuman, who turns 32 in March, will be back in Lancaster for a fourth season and sixth in the Atlantic League overall.  As a Barnstormer, the Georgia native has gone 8-2 with five saves in 124 appearances.  Over 120.2 innings, Shuman has yielded 84 hits and 46 walks while striking out 165.

He pitched for Bridgeport and Long Island prior to coming to Lancaster.

The Auburn University product was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2009.  He remained in the Rays’ system for four seasons, peaking at Class AA Montgomery.  Shuman spent the 2013 season with Class AA Richmond in the San Francisco organization.

Brazoban, 30, was 2-4 with four saves and a 1.99 ERA over 37 appearances in 2018.  The right-hander from the Dominican Republic walked 18 and struck out 41 in 40.2 innings of work.  His fastball was clocked at 100 miles per hour on occasion.

Prior to his time in Lancaster, Brazoban spent six years in the Colorado Rockies’ organization.  He was active from 2012-2014 and missed two full seasons.  Brazoban peaked at Class AA Hartford in 2017, posting a 2-1 record and 6.29 ERA in 24 outings.

“Both of these guys are power pitchers,” said Peeples. “When Shuman is healthy, he has shown he can be one of the best pen guys in the league.  Brazoban had a really good year when he was here before. Both have the potential to be back end guys in the bullpen, plus they are the type of people you like to have in the clubhouse.”

The Barnstormers will begin their 16^th season of play at Long Island, May 1 and open at home one week later.
