BARNSTORMERS FALL IN FREDERICK

New Franchise Picks Up First ALPB Win

Whatever the name will be in the long term remains hidden, but, on Friday night, the new Frederick franchise in the Atlantic League can be called winners.

David Kubiak fired 6 1/3 strong innings while Frederick’s third and fourth hitters combined to drive in five runs in a 6-1 win over the visiting Lancaster Barnstormers at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.

It was the first win in 14 tries for Frederick while the Barnstormers dropped to 4-9 on the season.

Kubiak (1-1) carried a three-hit shutout into the seventh inning before yielding consecutive doubles to Ariel Sandoval and Trayvon Robinson to score Lancaster’s only run.  The bullpen pitched hitless baseball over the remainder of the game.  Frederick pitching did not walk a batter and struck out nine in the stellar combined performance.

A quick burst against Jacob Lemoine (0-1) in the bottom of the first was all Frederick needed.  Scott Kelly reached on a low throw from the hole at shortstop by Jake Hoover.  Luke Becker followed with a walk, and both scored on a double to left by Craig Dedelow.  Jose Marmolejos drilled another double to the gap in right center for a third run before Lemoine settled down and retired 11 of the next 12 batters.

Frederick did not score again until catcher Kole Cottam led off the sixth with a booming homer to center.  Marmolejos added a similar blast with a man aboard in the seventh to cap the scoring.

The Barnstormers take on Frederick on Saturday with right-hander Brent Teller scheduled to make his return to the Atlantic League after spending much of 2022 in the Arizona farm system.  He will be opposed by Dustin Beggs (0-2).  The game may be viewed on Flosports.tv beginning at 5:55.

NOTES:  Sandoval’s double, a fly ball lost in the twilight by Johnni Turbo, stretched his hitting streak to 12…Melvin Mercedes singled in the fourth inning for a nine-game streak…Robinson has hit safely in every game he has started…Mike Adams pitched the eighth and extended his scoreless streak to eight innings.
