Barnstormers Blanked on 10 Hits

Partch Pitches York to Second Straight Win

The Lancaster Barnstormers rapped out 10 hits on Sunday afternoon, but they went together like the pieces of different jigsaw puzzles.

Curtis Partch (2-3) and a pair of relievers combined on the 10-hit shutout as the York Revolution took their second straight from the host Barnstormers, 5-0, Sunday afternoon at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Lancaster managed nine singles and a Blake Gailen double but never had more than two hits in the same inning and only got two runners as far as third base on the afternoon.

York’s defense made its own contribution to the blanking. In the fourth, with K.C. Hobson at first and one out, shortstop Ryan Dent, who had just moved over from third base, made a diving stop in the hole on a smash by Trayvon Robinson and turned it into a force out at second. In the seventh, a line drive by Tyler Clark was flagged by Dent between singles from Vladimir Frias and Darian Sandford. Angel Franco then triggered a 4-6-3 double play on a grounder toward the middle by Caleb Gindl.

Luke Westphal allowed the leadoff double by Gailen in the eighth and proceeded to strike out the side afterward, taking away Lancaster’s last, and best, chance to score.

The Barnstormers’ defense was not as sharp. In the first, following two walks and a pop up, Michael Burgess stroked a ground ball to the right of second base. Garrett Weber fielded the play, but his backhanded feed eluded the grasp of Frias, allowing the first run of the game to score, and Alonzo Harris to take third. Joel Guzman hit a soft one-hopper behind second base but beat the relay throw to first as the second run raced home.

Two innings later, Harris led off with a single off Nate Reed (0-2). He was put in motion with one out, and Michael Burgess’ ground ball glanced off Frias’ glove as the shortstop was headed to cover the bag. Guzman picked up Harris from third with a sacrifice fly. Angel Franco reached on an infield single. He and Burgess moved ahead on a wild pitch. Dent’s single into right field scored one, but Franco was thrown out at home by Gindl to end the inning.

Dent finished off the scoring with a leadoff homer to right in the ninth inning.

The series concludes Monday evening at 6:30 with right-hander Bryan Evans (1-2) facing southpaw Logan Williamson (1-3). Fans may tune into Blue Ridge Cable 11 or the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:30.

NOTES: The game was the first time the Barnstormers have been shut out at home this season…Gailen stole a base in the eighth, the league leading 76th for Lancaster…It kept the Barnstormers from going back-to-back games without a successful steal for the first time since the opening series…Lancaster was 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
