Right-Hander Deals Four-Hitter in 7-0 Win

Bryan Woodall could not get a win out of nine shutout innings last Thursday.  So, the right-hander had to throw nine more.

Woodall (3-0) shut down the York Revolution on four hits Tuesday evening, pitching the Lancaster Barnstormers to a 7-0 win in the second game of a four-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

With the win, the Barnstormers climbed to within 2 ½ games of York for the Freedom Division lead.

York managed only four singles off the Alabama native on Tuesday.  He walked none and struck out seven in the complete game effort.  Even more impressively, the Revolution never had a leadoff man on base and never moved a runner beyond first.

Woodall struck down the first 13 York batters before Joel Guzman spoiled the bid for history with a single into right field in the fifth.  He was immediately erased on the front end of a 6-4-3 double play.

The right-hander also received splendid defensive support, most notably when Kevin Ahrens made a diving stop in the hole at short and gunned down Isaias Tejeda to start the seventh.  Woodall even helped his own cause, covering first on a ball that caromed off first baseman Mike McDade’s glove to second baseman Jeff Kobernus, retiring Guzman to open the eighth.

Finally, the surging Barnstormers were also able to support Woodall at the plate.  Ahrens got Lancaster on the board with a one-out solo homer to right in the fourth off Mike McClendon (0-2), ending a string of nine straight outs for the York righty.

Lancaster’s second run crossed the plate in the fifth on a bad double play relay throw.  Ahrens made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly, and Caleb Gindl singled home Travis Witherspoon for a 4-0 edge.

Charlie Cutler’s bases loaded single keyed a three-run sixth as the Barnstormers cruised to the win behind their ace.

The Barnstormers will entertain the Revolution again on Wednesday evening.  Austin Bibens-Dirkx (1-3) will make the start for Lancaster against Jorge Martinez (1-1).  Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:45.
